St. Mike’s goes 0-fer in 4 league playoffs

NOTEBOOK

- DAVID GROSSMAN

There could be some bruised egos at Toronto’s St. Michael’s College following a disastrous week in four playoffs.

Undefeated teams in football, volleyball and soccer were all eliminated in league playoffs, while distance runners failed to win an individual or team medal at the provincial cross- country finals. UPON FURTHER REVIEW:

The Toronto District School Board boasted in a news release that a new sports scoreboard on its website was the first of its kind in Canada. Not so. Embarrassed TDSB employees were informed that all other boards of education in the GTA had sports websites up and running — and in some cases, for years. HEADING SOUTH:

Four local athletes have signed letters of intent to play at NCAA schools next fall. Lee Verweel, a lefthanded pitcher with Malvern, will be at the University of Maine. Vermeel had a 4- 1 record last season and a 2.10 ERA. Meanwhile, OFSAA discus and shot put champ Kaitlyn Andrews, from Acton High, has signed on with Stephen Austin State in Texas. Twins Angel and Jessica Roque, basketball players at Father Goetz Secondary in Mississauga, will play at Cleveland State. LOCAL COACHES IN RUNNING: Time for another high school football Coach of the Year award, this time sponsored by the NFL and CFL.

Central Tech’s Chuck Wakefield and Jim Rose, from Erindale, are among the 10 coaches from across Canada nominated by former athletes now playing at a Canadian university. The prize: $ 5,000 in new equipment for their school team.

Last week, Northern’s Dan Dominico was recognized by the CFL’s Toronto Argonauts for his achievements and his school awarded $10,000 towards football equipment.
