THE FIXER All signs point to up

- JACK LAKEY STAFF REPORTER

With so many things to fix, we’ve been getting behind on telling you about the outcome of a few problems that were featured in previous columns.

SIGN OF PROGRESS: A call last week from Michael Roberts was one of several inquiries we’ve had about an illegible sign at Bluffers Park. Last Feb. 28, our story explained how the sign informed the public about ponds that filter rainwater runoff before it enters the lake. But most of the letters had peeled off, leaving visitors to wonder. Sue Bartleman, who’s in charge of parks in that area, said she’d try to have the sign fixed by summer. We called last week to ask about it. An official said two replacement signs should be installed by year’s end.

MORE GOOD SIGNS: On June 23, we reported on a petition started by the Toronto Public Space Committee, about the absence of signs on new bus shelters that told transit riders the name of the street at which they had just arrived. Of 1,000 new shelters, only three had signs. The city said the shelters would all have signs by September. We’ve noticed the lettering has finally started to be installed in recent weeks.

SIGNED UP: Our column last Monday was about a temporary stop sign at the corner of Colonial Ave. and McCowan Rd. that kept falling over. When we drove by Tuesday, we met city inspector Frank Suppa, who said the regular sign will go back in the ground when water main flushing is completed, in a few weeks.
