Opposition candidate Manuel Zelaya was declared Honduras’s presidente­lect yesterday after promising to battle government corruption and push for life sentences for violent criminals. Supreme Electoral Tribunal president Aristides Mejia declared Zelaya the winner of Sunday’s race, but officials said final results weren’t yet available. The institute said Sunday night that Zelaya was projected to win 50.8 per cent of the vote to 45.2 per cent for Porfirio Lobo Sosa of the governing National Party.
