If, like the Pope, a young man aspiring to the Roman Catholic priesthood favoured “dazzling new vestments ( some with shimmering, sequin-like details),” wore Prada loafers and Serengeti sunglasses, and had a young, “ gorgeous” associate, he would be denied entry to seminary because, according to the Vatican’s tired stereotypes, he would be exhibiting gay tendencies.
