Ten of the best of Landsberg’s whackiest moments
On- and off-screen classic moments from Off The Record’s first decade. 1. Hockey legend Boom Boom Geoffrion wasn’t too fond of host Michael Landsberg (left) or the show. During a commercial break, he told his wife, “Go warm up the car, we’re leaving.” 2. NakedNews.com reporter wanted to do the show in the buff and continually threatened to remove articles of clothing. The crew wouldn’t let her. 3. Figure skater Toller Cranston asked Roger Clemens why baseball players are so fat. Clemens actually gave a plausible explanation why. 4. Chastity Bono fell asleep in the green room and then again on the set. Her publicist went to wake up her and then turned to the producer and said, “I don’t want to touch her. You do it.” 5. Kiss member Gene Simmons claimed to have slept with 4,500 women and openly flirted on-air with fellow guest Thea Andrews, who said she didn’t want to be number 4,501. Fellow guest Mark Tewksbury then raised his hand to volunteer. Simmons declined the offer. 6. The late Roger Neilson received a phone call in the green room prior to a taping, answering with, “Yep, uh huh, okay, no problem.” After hanging up, he turned to Landsberg and explained he had just been fired by Bob Clarke. Neilson still did the show. 7. A former CFL and NFL player told Toronto mayor David Miller off camera that Toronto is a better city than Ottawa because “it’s easier to get crack here.” 8. Former Argo Gene Mack and radio commentator Liam Maguire almost came to blows before Landsberg begged Mack not to hit Maguire during a commercial break. 9. Author Naomi Klein walked out of the makeup room when she realized the entire show was not about her new book. 10. The list of demands Meatloaf requested for his appearance included 30 cans of diet pop.
