Palestinian convictions almost automatic: Study

Israel’s military court system for Palestinian suspects in the West Bank produces almost automatic convictions, an Israeli human rights group charged yesterday.

Yesh Din said in a new report that in 2006 more than 99.7 per cent of those accused were convicted, 95 per cent in plea bargains.

It said its inquiry concluded suspects were often unable to present a full defence with effective counsel. It also found suspects and their lawyers often did not understand the charges because the Hebrewlanguage hearings were translated mainly by conscript soldiers rather than professional interpreters.
