Gilgan honoured for charity work
Builder appointed to the Order of Ontario
Peter Gilgan, Mattamy Homes founder and CEO, was among 27 Ontarians recently appointed to the Order of Ontario for his contributions to health, education, social services and other community causes.
David C. Onley, Lieutenant Governor of Ontario, invested the appointees at a ceremony at Queen’s Park Jan. 26.
There were 27 appointed to the Order of Ontario, including threetime Toronto mayor David Crombie, former Ontario opposition leader John Tory, and popular bilingual children’s educator Suzanne “Marie-soleil” Pinel.
The appointees were chosen for their contributions to the arts, law, science, medicine, history, politics, philanthropy and the environment.
In the past two years, Gilgan, Canada’s largest builder of detached homes, has donated $15 million to Ryerson University’s new athletic centre at the former Maple Leaf Gardens, which will to be renamed the Peter Gilgan Athletic Centre (some of Gilgan’s eight children have studied at Ryerson); $10 million to the new Oakville hospital; $1 million to the William Osler Health Centre; and $1 million to Markham-stouffville Hospital.
Gilgan, whose offices are in Oakville, also has been a major supporter of the Oakville YMCA, Sheridan College, Wellspring Cancer Support Centre, Trillium Hospital, George Brown College and the Milton Arts Centre. Mattamy Homes has also been a huge supporter of the United Way in Oakville and many other community charities in Toronto, Milton, Markham and the surrounding areas.
