Super states
OHIO
Winner: Too close to call
Delegates at stake: 66 Highlights: Santorum was ahead by more than 10,000 votes earlier Tuesday night, but Romney came on strong in a few vote-rich counties, pulling into the lead as the night went on. Still, the outcome was so close Tuesday, it could be days before a winner is named.
The state is a bellwether — no Republican has won the presidency without capturing Ohio.
OKLAHOMA
Winner: Santorum
Delegates at stake: 43 Highlights: Santorum tagged Oklahoma “ground zero of the conservative movement,” and his anti-abortion, pro-family values message did well with enthusiastic crowds here.
TENNESSEE
Winner: Santorum
Delegates at stake: 58 Highlights: Santorum had a smooth path to victory in this conservative state. Romney finished third in 2008 and a win this time would have been considered an upset.
IDAHO
Winner: Romney
Delegates at stake: 32 Highlights: Idaho’s Republican Party moved the state’s nominating caucuses to Super Tuesday to give the often overlooked northwestern state a stronger voice in the nominating process. Romney jumped in front in Idaho, which has a large Mormon population.
MASSACHUSETTS
Winner: Romney
Delegates at stake: 41 Highlights: There was little doubt Romney would win the primary in Massachusetts, where he served as governor. He captured about three-quarters of the votes and appeared on track to take all 41 delegates.
ALASKA
Winner: TBA
Delegates at stake: 27 Highlights: Polls didn’t close in Alaska until midnight Eastern time. The only Republican candidate to campaign in Alaska for the two-week caucus run has been Paul. Former Alaska governor and 2008 vice-presidential candidate Sarah Palin has not endorsed any of the candidates.
GEORGIA
Winner: Gingrich
Delegates at stake: 76 Highlights: Gingrich proclaimed Georgia’s primary a “must win” and he delivered, taking about half the vote in his home state. It was the second state he won in this campaign after taking neighbouring South Carolina in January.
NORTH DAKOTA
Winner: Santorum
Delegates at stake: 28 Highlights: Romney won the North Dakota caucuses in 2008 with about 36 per cent of the vote. This time around, Santorum captured the state with about 40 per cent, and Romney was in third place late Tuesday, trailing Paul.
VERMONT
Winner: Romney
Delegates at stake: 14 Highlights: A Vermont loss for Romney would have been a shock. The question Tuesday was whether he’d capture 50 per cent of the state’s vote, which would automatically give him all 14 delegates, or if they would be divided proportionally.
VIRGINIA
Winner: Romney
Delegates at stake: 49 Highlights: Only Romney and Paul competed in Virginia because the others failed to collect the required 10,000 signatures to get on the ballot. The question was how close it would be, but Romney had 59 per cent to Paul’s 41 per cent.
