Accused man’s hands ‘all bloody’

Witness says ‘stomping’ sounds in Rafal Lasota’s bedroom woke him up

- PETER EDWARDS STAFF REPORTER

The hands of accused child killer Rafal Lasota were soaked in blood the evening Grade 8 student Aleksandra Firgan-hewie was stabbed to death in his home, a Brampton court heard Wednesday.

“He was all bloody,” construction worker A.J. Dziura told police, hours after the body of the 13-yearold was found in two garbage bags in the backyard of Lasota’s Mississauga home on Dec. 10, 2008. “His hands were all bloody.” Parts of Dziura’s police statement were played at the first-degree murder trial of Lasota, 28, and his ex-girlfriend Michelle Liard, 21.

Dziura is the common-law husband of Lasota’s sister, Monika LaSota, 31.

But under intense questioning from assistant crown attorney Brian Mcguire, Dziura backed away from much of what he’d told police earlier.

Hours after the killing, Dziura told police Liard actively tried to block him from coming into the family home around 6:30 p.m. on Dec. 10, 2008.

In his videotaped police statement, Dziura held up his forearm in a blocking gesture, continuing that Liard said: “She’s like, ‘Don’t go there, don’t go there . . . everything’s okay. The girl’s okay.’ ”

But under oath on Wednesday, Dziura said Liard “wasn’t holding the door.” He also testified Liard didn’t try convince him that a girl who had been in the home was okay.

He also backed away from his comments on Dec. 11, 2008, when he told police he could hear Lasota loudly talking with Monika near Lasota’s upstairs bedroom.

In his earlier police statement, Dziura said he overheard a conversation between the siblings: “Monika was saying, ‘You have blood on your hands. What’s going on? What’s going on?’”

He told police that Lasota replied: “Don’t worry, don’t worry. Give me 10 minutes.”

However, when questioned in court by Mcguire, Dziura said he didn’t really hear this first-hand.

“She told me it in the car,” he testified. “I actually didn’t hear anything.”

Court has heard there were 37 stab wounds and 26 blunt force trauma wounds on Firgan-hewie’s tiny body.

In December 2008, Dziura and Monika Lasota lived in a basement apartment in the same Mississauga house as Lasota and Teresa Lasota, the mother of Monika and Rafal.

Dziura said he was asleep early that evening when he was awakened by a loud “stomping” sound from Rafal’s upstairs bedroom. “Are you a sound sleeper?” Mcguire asked.

“You could say so, I guess,” Dziura replied.

Mcguire noted that Dziura and Monika Lasota have a child together. Then Mcguire asked Dziura if his memory might have been subconsciously affected by his family loyalty. “Is that possible?” he asked.

“Yes,” Dziura replied.
