Toronto Star readership tops 1 million in the GTA
The Toronto Star now has more than one million readers a day, bolstering its position as the most-read newspaper in Canada and mostvisited newspaper website across the GTA, according to a survey by the Newspaper Audience Databank (Nadbank).
Total weekday readership of the Star stands at 1,007,600 in the GTA, up 4 per cent, the Nadbank 2011 survey shows. That’s the highest it has been since 2004. The survey also shows that combined print and online readership of the Star in the GTA held relatively steady at 2.3 million adults, down 1.8 per cent over the previous survey. That’s double the total weekly readership of the Globe and Mail and Toronto Sun and more than triple that of the National Post. The Star reached 1.18 million read- ers on Saturday and 746,000 readers on Sunday, according to the industry survey. “We are enthusiastic about these results,” said John Cruickshank, publisher of the Star and president of Star Media Group. “They show that a growing number of our readers value the work we do, both in print and online. While many other metropolitan newspapers across North America are seeing major declines in their readership, these results show we are providing news and information that readers want and meet the needs of our advertisers as well.”
The second most-read printed newspaper and online newspaper website across the GTA was Metro, with almost 1.13 million weekly readers. That free newspaper is majority owned by Star Media Group.
Overall, the survey showed average weekday newspaper readership was up 1.1 per cent in the GTA.
