Girl lives up to her stormy name
Couple wanted name to suit a ‘fiery and intelligent’ girl
“Is she a Tempest in a teapot?”
Well, yes, sometimes, mom Rebecca Scarlett will reply when asked the question. “She has her days.”
“Is she named after the Shakespeare play?”
No, but Rebecca and husband Michael Brian Green were aware of it.
Those are the kinds of queries strangers will ask when they find out the Mississauga couple named their daughter Tempest. The couple, whose names and those of their family members are more traditional, were determined to get creative.
“We wanted to break that mould,” explains Rebecca.
“We love the sound of the word Tempest, and thought it sounded like a name.
“We really liked the sound of it, and what it meant — stormy.”
Tempest Athena Scarlett-green was born June 8, 2010, at Credit Valley Hospital in Mississauga, weighing just over 8 lbs.
Even before becoming pregnant, the couple had created a list of unusual names. When they found out they were expecting, Rebecca dug up the notebook she used to keep track of their favourites.
Even in the womb, Tempest was active, says Rebecca, who says both she and her husband can themselves “be kind of stubborn and stormy.”
They expected Tempest to live up to her name.
(As a joke, Rebecca’s brother has coined the term “Tempest tantrum,” as she heads into her terrible twos.)
“We knew that she would be a fierce little one, and her name suits her perfectly,” says Rebecca.
“She is a sweet child, but she makes her presence known.”
Her middle name is after the Greek goddess of wisdom; both Rebecca and Brian are mythology buffs.
Tempest was an early talker and is already speaking in sentences.
