Sox lose Ellsbury indefinitely

-

Mike Aviles, batting leadoff in place of injured Jacoby Ellsbury, homered to spark a three-run seventh inning and the Boston Red Sox went on to beat the Tampa Bay Rays 13-5 on Saturday.

Before the game, the Red Sox placed Ellsbury on the 15-day DL with a partially dislocated right shoulder. Ellsbury, last year’s AL MVP runner-up, suffered the injury sliding into second in Friday’s 12-2 win — Boston’s home opener.

Manager Bobby Valentine didn’t offer a timetable for his recovery.

“Proper treatment,” Valentine said when asked what Ellsbury would need. “Maybe it’ll show the idea (of a leadoff hitter) is a little overrated.”

YU TURN: Yu Darvish allowed 14 baserunners in five-plus innings but wriggled out of trouble often and the Texas Rangers went on to beat the Minnesota Twins 6-2.

“He was much better,” Rangers manager Ron Washington said when asked to compare Darvish’s day to his first outing April 10. “Still have to work on getting ahead of hitters quicker, but he was much better today with his command.”

Darvish gave up nine hits, walked four and hit a batter.

NET WERTH: Jayson Werth’s basesloaded single to lead Washington past Cincinnati 2-1 on Friday made him the first big leaguer since 1963 to deliver a game-ending RBI in the 13th inning on Friday the 13th. The winning run for the Pirates in that 1963 game was scored by Dick Schofield, Werth’s grandfather.
