TRUE BLOOD 101

- DEBRA YEO TORONTO STAR

Season 5 picks up where Season 4 left off (if you haven’t watched last season yet, stop reading here) with Tara mortally wounded on Sookie’s kitchen floor after taking the bullet that Debbie Pelt meant for Sookie; Debbie dead at Sookie’s hands; Bill and Eric on the Vampire Authority’s hit list; Sam in trouble with werewolves; vampire king Russell Edgington escaped from his tomb; and Steve Newlin knocking on Jason’s door. Here’s a look at who’s who and what they’ll face this season: Sookie Stackhouse: Part human, part fairy and the former lover of both Bill and Eric, Sookie’s challenge is keeping the secret of Debbie’s killing from Sheriff Andy Bellefleur, from Debbie’s parents who’ve come to Bon Temps looking for their missing daughter, and from Debbie’s ex Alcide. Bill Compton/Eric Northman: The former vampire king and sheriff have both been cast off by Sookie, whom they both still love, and are under a sentence of “true death.” They’ll also have to dodge old king Russell, who’ll be out for revenge after they left him buried in cement at a building site at the end of last season. Alcide Herveaux: His construction business is about the only thing going well for Alcide. He banished faithless werewolf girlfriend Debbie, who unbeknownst to him has been killed by Sookie, who turned down his romantic overtures. And killing Marcus means he’s at odds with his own kind. Sam Merlotte: The shape shifter and owner of Merlotte’s bar didn’t endear himself to the local werewolf pack last season when he tried to avenge the murder of his brother, Tommy, and got involved in the killing of the pack leader, Marcus. Expect the feud to continue, even once the wolves learn it was Alcide who dispatched Marcus. Tara Thornton: Considering that Tara had half her head blown off saving Sookie, her human life has come to an end. But in the supernatural world, dead isn’t necessarily dead. Jason Stackhouse: Sookie’s himbo brother was still recovering from the physical and psychic wounds of being used as a breeder by werepanthers when he slept with his best friend’s vampire girlfriend and lost BFF Hoyt as a result. Now he’s got former nemesis Steve Newlin, a one-time vampirehater turned vampire, at his door. Steve’s reason for being there may surprise you, though. Lafayette Reynolds: Hard to know what Lafayette has left to live for, since he killed his lover, Jesus, during a bout of demonic possession and his cousin Tara’s also gone. But Sookie will need his help with the dangerous situations she’s bound to get into.
