Need tickets? Here’s how to get ’em

-

Listen up, festival-goers. Things have changed. Yes, it is still possible to buy advance tickets for the 37th annual Toronto International Film Festival. But in 2012, there are far more ticket options than in past years, making it easier to cater to individual tastes.

There are also likely to be fewer, and shorter, lineups of advance ticket buyers at the box office. This is because the advance purchase and selection process has moved online. Gone are the days of lining up at the box office with meticulously highlighted film schedules, which staff would slip into numbered boxes, to be entered into a crude and often cruel lottery.

(Not to worry. There will still be lengthy queues at the theatres for ticket holders and “rush” line hopefuls.) Here’s what you need to know: The bad news first: “My Choice” ticket packages are sold out. So much for options. Next year, plan your festival earlier.

There is some good news: “TIFF Choice” packages are still available. This means the festival selects films for you based upon various program preferences (e.g. Canadian, Midnight Madness, City to City, Wavelengths) or variety (daytime, evening, premium screenings). Purchase your preferred package, then find out which films you’ve got on Aug. 31

Where can you buy tickets? The best option is by visiting tiff.net/tickets, but also by calling 416-599-TIFF or1-888-5998433, or at the box office at Metro Centre (225 King St. W., entrance at the foot of Duncan St.).

The festival program book is now available for pickup at the box office. Or scan the films and screening times at tiff.net.

If you don’t want the festival to choose your films for you, you’ll have to wait to purchase individual tickets. See what films are available at tiff.net beginning Sept. 1; you can buy tickets beginning Sept. 2.

If a film you want is unavailable, check again at 7 a.m. on the morning of the screening.

Ticket prices? For adults, it’s $19.69 for a regular screening, $38.27 for premium.

The festival runs from Sept. 6 to 16. Any questions? Star staff
