Q: We just got engaged and are starting to think about buying a home. What are the important steps we should take in our search? A: Congratulations on the pending nuptials. You’re not alone. A lot of engaged or newlywed couples start looking for a home to build their life together. Many of them are first-time homebuyers. That’s why RECO will be one of the many exhibitors at the National Bridal Show, taking place Jan. 25 to 27 at the Direct Energy Centre, on the CNE grounds, in Toronto (nationalbridalshow.com). If you are planning to attend, stop by RECO’s booth for some useful information to get started. If you’re unable to join us at the show, there’s a lot of useful information on RECO’s website (reco.on.ca), like publications on working with a real estate professional, buyer representation agreements and home inspections. Next, it’s a good idea to ask friends and family to recommend a real estate professional to help guide you through the process. Take the time to meet with a few candidates to find one you’re comfortable working with and who will meet your needs.

It’s important to know that anyone who trades in real estate in Ontario must be registered with RECO. Before you start working with that professional, use the “Registrant Search” feature on RECO’s website to find their registration status and whether they have been subject to disciplinary action. These steps will give you a good basis for your search.

Good luck.
