The Maple Leafs start their season on the road against the Montreal Canadiens in what’s arguably a must-win game. Despite finishing last in the Eastern Conference last season, the Canadiens managed to steal three games from the Leafs in six meetings. In April, the Leafs lost to the Sabres just after losing to the Islanders — two teams they had to beat and clubs Toronto will also face in the first month of the shortened season. March ends with back-to-back games against the Bruins (a team the Leafs never managed to beat in six tries last season), plus dates with the Panthers, Hurricanes and Senators — three teams likely to be in the fight for the eighth and final playoff spot. As usual, the season also ends against the Canadiens, a game the Leafs can make meaningless well beforehand:
