Motor City Madness!
When those of us here at Toronto Star Wheels sat down to discuss how we were going to cover the media preview days at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit, we had some options.
We could cover some of them, or we could cover all of them.
We could skim the surface, or we could leave no stone unturned.
We opted for the latter and committed to cover the Detroit show preview like a blanket.
We sent a team of 15 people — 12 are in the picture above (two missed it), plus photographer Steve Russell, who took the photo. With the exception of a U.S. wire service, nobody had more people covering the preview than Wheels. We produced more than a dozen videos, posted hundreds of Tweets and Facebook entries, a similar number of contributions to our rolling blog, cov- ered every unveiling and debut (more than 50 of them), gathered facts and figures for all the Detroit auto show stories you will read in this section today and shot dozens of photographs.
Just about everything, except the stories filed later in the week for publi- cation today, was published on our Internet site, wheels.ca, on Sunday night, Monday and Tuesday.
By the time the preview days ended, we were all pretty much exhausted. But it was worth it, because if you were looking for one-stop shopping to find out all about the Detroit auto show, wheels.ca was your best bet.
In fact, for much of Monday afternoon, wheels.ca was second only to the show’s official site for Internet users searching the web for Detroit news.
When it comes to auto show coverage, though, we’re just getting warmed up.
The Canadian International AutoShow in Toronto is fast approaching. The media preview day will be held Feb. 14 and the show will open to the public the following day.
We plan to cover Toronto the same way we covered Detroit: comprehensively. Please join us then. nmcdonald@thestar.ca
