The Blue Jays are continuing to focus promotional efforts on improving the pre-game ballpark experience at the Rogers Centre by expanding Friday Fan Fests this summer.

Now the licensed events, which aim to create a tailgating atmosphere with live music and barbecued food in the twoand-a-half hours before first pitch, will be held every Friday home game in July and August, plus an additional “Cottage in the City” fan fest on June 21.

The Rogers Centre, one of Major League Baseball’s few multipurpose stadiums, has long been derided as among the worst ballparks in terms of atmosphere and overall experience.

In recent years, the Jays have tried to remedy that by doing away with discounted tickets and focusing instead on enhancing the ballpark experience.

Senior vice-president of business operations Stephen Brooks said the plan is working, adding that the team saw a spike in ticket sales last year.

Once again, the Jays are also planning a special event for Canada Day, a day game against the Detroit Tigers.

The club is also continuing its popular bobblehead giveaways, with Edwin Encarnacion, Brett Lawrie and J.P. Arencibia featured this year. Other giveaways include a Jose Reyes figurine, Carlos Delgado baseball and Jays beach towel.

The Jays are introducing three music-themed promotional nights — May 2 (rock ’n’ roll), July 4 (country) and Aug. 15 (top 40) — which are expected to include digital-download music giveaways and other promotions.

The club will continue to run Jr. Jays Saturdays, when kids under 14 can purchase discounted tickets and run the bases after the game.
