Scenic lookout is trashy without a garbage can

- JACK LAKEY STAFF REPORTER

A garbage can is unlikely to make anyone’s list of things that they miss, until it’s gone.

A reader emailed to say one of the best-kept secrets in town is the Chester Hill Rd. lookout, a panoramic outcrop that overlooks the Don Valley, west of Broadview Ave., north of Danforth Ave. “Until a couple weeks ago, there used to be a large waste can at the lookout, which got used most of the time,” she said.

“More than once, I have yelled at kids dropping beer cans on the ground or even over the side onto the Don Valley Parkway . . . but because the waste can was there, most of it was manageable.

“No longer. It is totally heartbreaking and utterly disgusting.”

We went there and found a plastic bag dangling from a pole with trash in it, which looks like it was put there by one of the neighbours to keep down the littering. The receptacle was a lot better, so why did it vanish? Status: Patricia Barrett, of solid waste management, emailed to say the temporary receptacle that had always been there was removed at the request of neighbours, “due to illegal dumping of residential waste around the bin. So it appears there won’t be a replacement bin installed.” Let’s see how long that lasts. Update: On Wednesday we reported on long stretches of temporary asphalt curbs on Neilson Rd. that have been there for nearly two years. Councillor Paul Ainslie emailed us a construction timetable that shows water main work still has to be done before Neilson is resurfaced and the curbs replaced, which won’t happen until next year.
