> CAMPAIGN NOTES: TALES FROM THE TRAIL

-

NDP set for World Cup June 12 is the big day and York South-Weston New Democrat MP Mike Sullivan knows it.

Helping former MPP Paul Ferreira mount a comeback bid against Liberal Laura Albanese in the same riding, Sullivan was at a rally with Ontario NDP Leader Andrea Horwath on Weston Rd. handing out literature in the Friday sunshine.

“Sharing your passion for The Beau- tiful Game,” said the headline over Sullivan’s picture.

Inside is a full schedule for the World Cup, with the first game on Ontario’s election day, June 12, at 4 p.m. between Brazil and Canada.

Rob Ferguson Hudak runs into flak Progressive Conservative Leader Tim Hudak got the cold shoulder from one Second World War vet Friday when he visited Chartwell Scarlett Heights Retirement Residence to take part in a D-Day commemoration. Before speaking at the seniors’ home, Hudak was working the room, shaking hands and making small talk. That was until he ran into Ross Baker, who was there when the Allied troops invaded Europe. Baker refused to shake his hand and scolded Hudak. “This day is for veterans, not poli- ticians,” said Baker, wearing a chest full of medals, who later spoke about his experiences on D-Day when Canadian troops poured onto Juno Beach, June 6, 1944. Hudak spoke emotionally about the sacrifice that Baker and other Canadians made that day and all during the war, including some of his own family.

Richard J. Brennan Grin and bear it Sudbury NDP candidate — and Rob Ford doppelganger — Joe Cimino has indicated support for the Liberals’ spring bear hunt.

That had Liberal candidate Andrew Olivier pouncing on an apparent contradiction with New Democrat policy.

NDP Leader Andrea Horwath didn’t clear things up Thursday in Milton.

“We need to engage northerners in the solutions that affect their communities,” she said.

But hunting nuisance bears isn’t popular policy with urban Ontario, which explains the vagueness.
