Just what are ‘conservative’ values?

-

Re Harper says Radio-Canada employees hate conservative values, Feb. 17 It sounds as if Stephen Harper is running on a conservative values platform for the coming election. As such, he should list these values with which he plans to run the government of Canada, including the moral ones. I would like to see the media continually ask him to list these values so that the citizens of Canada can make an informed choice.

Having been raised in a Christian household, I do not see many of the values that I was raised with being exhibited by the current government. Once these values are listed, they can be examined to ascertain if this government has followed them in the last nine years. This would also validate his comment that Radio-Canada employees hate conservative values as a survey of statements could be developed to attest to the accuracy of his statement.

Until this is done, it remains an opinion. We need reality-based facts not ideological opinion. Sharon Walker, North Ba,Ont. Like most Canadians, Radio-Canada would like to conserve and uphold our democratic traditions. We would like to conserve our traditional international role in the world as peace makers and honest brokers.

We would like Harper to pull back from his assault on charities who are trying to carrying on, to conserve our generations-old tradition of social activism, of looking out for and defending the unprivileged amongst us. We would also like to conserve the tradition of limited government intervention so as to balance the financial playing field for the majority of Canadians, to conserve, strengthen and expand our middle class.

Kudos to Radio-Canada and the rest of the 65 to 70 per cent of Canadians who are truly “conservative” — to hold on to the best of what this country has meant for its people over my seven decades. Ed Lamb, Toronto Harper says Radio-Canada employees hate “conservative” values. Well, he could always do what he did to the CBC: fill it with his people at the top, bring it to its knees and slowly destroy everything Canadian about it. Oh yeah, and do it using our own money and for our own good. Thanks, King Harper. D’Arcy Rattray, Toronto
