Meghan Trainor teary over avid fans’ loud singalong

- LESLIE ARMSTRONG STAFF REPORTER

(out of 4) Meghan Trainor, Friday at the Phoenix. Meghan Trainor is about more than just that bass.

The bubbly 21-year-old from Nantucket has scored success after success since releasing her introductory hit “All About That Bass” last year.

The infectious singalong, complete with a message of self-acceptance, spent eight weeks at the top of the Billboard chart in 2014, and maybe even longer in your head.

Then, Trainor’s first full-length album Title debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart in early January, selling 195,000 copies in its first week.

It’s the biggest debut for a female pop act’s first full-length album in more than five years, according to Billboard.

To cap it off, Trainor was nominated for Song of the Year and Record of the Year at the Grammys.

To say it’s been a whirlwind of a year for Trainor would be an understatement.

And while performing in front of a sold-out crowd ranging from elementary school kids to middle agers at the Phoenix Friday night, it was clear the up-and-coming pop princess was still soaking it all in.

After starting her 60-minute show with “My Future Husband” before going right into “Mr. Almost,” Trainor greeted the crowded with a long “Yoooo” and introduced her third song “Credit” by telling screaming fans she wrote it after running into a ex-boyfriend out with his “new thing” wearing a leather jacket she bought him.

The standing-room only crowd sang along — loudly — with Trainor, but by her fifth song, “Title”, the curvy blond was still encouraging fans to join in “if you know the words,” as if she believed they might not.

It was “Title” — which Trainor later deemed “the best song of the night” — that had the singer seemingly marvelling at her “Megatronz,” who sang the whole way through.

“You guys are going to make me cry,” Trainor said, as she clamped her hand on the microphone stand and gazed out into the crowd for one long moment, before blowing a kiss and moving on.

While Trainor is clearly still revelling in headlining the That Bass tour, afeeling she captures in the love song to the fans “Like I’m Gonna Lose You,” the glitz and glam of her show, which includes videos, a bedazzled microphone, a ukulele, pink microphone stands, confetti and lots and lots of sequins, begs for a bigger venue.

But while she’s an act you might stereotypically expect to see go from mall tours to sold out arenas, ACC-style, Trainor took it all in stride.

She chuckled at the “cramped” space and her sparkling setup shone against the grungy walls at the Phoenix.

The place came alive when Trainor finished her set with “Lips Are Moving,” her second-most popular hit, and by the time Trainor asked the crowd, “Are you ready for that bass?” late in her encore, they were.
