Minimum wage hike a plus

-

Re Hiking minimum wage could come at a price,

April 11 Economist Mike Moffatt should visit Australia, where the dollar is roughly on par with ours and the minimum wage is up to $20 an hour. Small coffee shops are abundant, espresso coffees cost the same as here, about $4, and groceries, too, are the same, on average.

The service is as friendly and just as good, but tipping is not expected and yet the staff generally seem happier.

Staffing levels also appear on a par with Canada, so the wage levels seem to have minimal effect. They are, after all, not the largest cost of running the business.

And if people are paid a decent wage then they can afford to spend more, which cannot but help the economy.

It is definitely a move that our government should strongly consider. Chris Corbin, Toronto
