ADDRESSING NEEDS IN BUSINESS COMMUNITY

-

The school of continuing studies at the University of Toronto is the first continuing education provider in Canada whose courses have been recognized by the Chartered Professional Accountants (CPA) of Ontario.

The four school of continuing studies foundation courses recognized by the CPA are: Accounting: The fundamentals; management accounting; economics introductory; and quantitative methods for business management. The school is working with CPA Ontario to finalize a whole suite of courses through to the advanced level.

“We brought these four foundation courses together as the certificate in management accounting fundamentals to address business community needs and important skills,” says Lee McTavish, program director, partnerships.

The courses will increase a learner’s understanding of the financial community and the skills that are most needed.

“You come out with tremendous knowledge, understanding and skills that are important,” McTavish says.

All of the school’s instructors have stellar qualifications and business experience, theory and knowledge. Plus, they know how it’s applied on the job.

“Learners get practical knowledge so they can go into their workplace and start making a difference right away,” McTavish says. “Our programs provide a blend of knowledge and practical application.

“Over the longer term, once these courses have been successfully completed, learners can apply them to meet the academic requirements of CPA prerequisite education program (CPA PREP) if they wish to pursue the chartered professional accountant (CPA) designation.”

The accounting and finance courses attract a diverse group of learners from across the city and province, as well as from around the world.

An internationally educated professional from another country may want accounting and finance knowledge in order to make a career transition.

“We see many of those individuals and it’s a wonderful way to transition to work in Canada.”

At the same time, a person who is thinking of moving to Canada may take a course online as preparation.
