STRADDLING BUSINESS AND IT

New courses at Centennial College

-

The new courses being offered this summer at Centennial College that straddle the business/IT world prepare new graduates or mid-career professionals to enter the field of IT business analysis and agile/SCRUM implementation.

“The high demand in the job market for such skills has led us to offer these courses in Centennial College, where students not only become job-ready in a short period of time, they also get ready to be certified as business analysts or agile/SCRUM practitioners,” says Basudeb Mukherjee, president and CEO of Techno Canada Centre of Excellence, a corporate training firm located in Toronto, and professor of engineering at Centennial College.

The new courses include the SCRUM developer certified course (May), SCRUM master certified course (June), business analysis foundation course (May), and the advanced business analysis — CBAP preparation course (June).

Students will understand how to work as part of SCRUM teams, what the roles of the different members of the team are, and how work is carried out in iterations for a faster result.

“These SCRUM/agile courses are designed to help students work through specific issues that they will face while conducting SCRUM projects and how they can overcome them,” Mukherjee says.

SCRUM is a methodology that is used for managing complex projects.

“Project management has traditionally been a rigid and predictable process where phases of a project are implemented sequentially,” Mukherjee says. “Such approach is known as waterfall approach representative of the unidirectional, predictable and cascading flow of water in a waterfall.”

Mukherjee says with the increase in complexity and rapid change in technology, managing complex projects have become daunting.

“SCRUM offers an innovative way to break complex projects into smaller components and then implementing them in an iterative way,” Mukherjee says.

The business analysis courses help students learn the nuances of being a business analyst and gives them the requisite expertise and learning to easily transition into these roles in organizations.

All the courses are provided in a classroom format along with an online module that students can access through web links or through a mobile app using their smartphones.
