Ignorance’s last bastion

-

Re Thousands protest against updated sex education, April 15 I feel sorry for parents who were duped into protesting the upgraded curriculum on sexual health education. Sex is perhaps the only area of life where some prefer ignorance over knowledge.

These parents are fearful of the wrong thing. They should fear ignorance, which leads to bad decision and leaves their children open to exploitation. When children have knowledge, they are confident and proud of their knowledge and not embarrassed to ask questions when they need to.

These protesting parents can rest assured that, with their fearful and negative attitude, their children will never come to them with their questions. Ruth Miller, Toronto One parent, with a 6-year-old daughter in Catholic school, made it blatantly clear why this new curriculum is needed. When someone believes that “sexually stimulat(ed) boys” and “girls who are nice looking” are the reason rape occurs in our society, it is obvious that sex education needs an overhaul.

The parent says she is afraid for her daughter’s safety. Growing up in ignorance, I would be afraid too.

The anti-sex-ed protesters at Queen’s Park were off the mark by about 800 metres. The rest of the dinosaurs are at the ROM. Stuart Rogers, Toronto This protest leaves me exasperated and very sad over the trouble ahead for some of the children of these protesters, some of whom must be cringing at the behaviour of their parents.

I would not be very surprised if most of the children over 10 are already far more knowledgeable than their parents. Barbara Beattie, teacher, Richmond Hill
