‘Diary’ deserved 4 stars

Re Over-direction turns powerful story into

mishmash, May 31 Richard Ouzounian gives this Stratford play, The Diary of Anne Frank, 2.5 stars. In reality, it rates four full stars.

The set is simple and wooden. An elaborate one is not needed and would take away from the story. The attic in Amsterdam would have been just as plain.

When the actors talk about their personal experience­s, it adds to the show and makes it meaningful. The sombre backstage music also helps the transition through time spent in hiding.

During some scenes, you could have heard a pin drop, the audience (half students, half adults) was so engaged.
