All in the Family: Discover Memorable Summer Vacations for Everyone

- By Michele Sponagle

Atlantic Canada is famous for its epic beauty, rich history and culture, paired with warm hospitality. But each province — Prince Edward Island, Newfoundland, Nova Scotia and New Brunswick — has its own distinct charms, making them ideal for a summer getaway.

Family time

Finding activities that appeal to everyone in your family can be tricky. Fortunately, there are an abundance of exciting ones in Atlantic Canada. If your crew thrives on adrenaline, consider tidal bore rafting in Nova Scotia where the Bay of Fundy, home to the highest tides in the world, meets the Shubenacadie River. Hop on board a zodiac boat with a guide and ride the wild waves. A number of outfitters offer packages.

Or experience wild in a different way. In Prince Edward Island. Sign up for a Feeding the Giants trip where you’ll head out into the ocean in search of massive bluefin tuna, weighing up to 1,200 pounds. When they’re fed herring, they create a frenzy in the water – an amazing sight!

Meanwhile, picturesque Saint Andrews in New Brunswick serves as a convenient hub for ocean-based activities like whale watching. You can even go out on a majestic tall ship, ideal for spotting whales, seals, porpoises and birdlife, like bald eagles. Then take a leisurely drive (about three hours) to the world famous Hopewell Rocks.

For families looking to blend education and fun, the Village Historique Acadien takes visitors back in time to explore the culture of the Acadian people who first came to New Brunswick in 1770. Kids love the hands-on activities offered and the chance to dress up in period costume.

Grown-up fun

Moms and dads need their fun, too. They should check out the brand new Good Cheer Trail in Nova Scotia, the only one of its kind in Canada that strings together more than 60 wineries, craft breweries and distilleries. Appoint a designated driver or book a spot on a tour with a company like Uncork Nova Scotia.

Busy parents can also appreciate a bit of pampering. Book a couple’s treatment at Soothe Downtown Spa in St. John’s, Newfoundland. It’s highly rated for its hot-stone massage and meticulous pedicures, just in time for sandal season!

At the Rodd Crowbush Golf & Beach Resort in P.E.I., twosomes can take advantage of a package combining unlimited golf for the day, relaxation massages and a twonight stay.

Or get a bit creative by participat i ng in Fredericton, New Brunswick’s popular EdVentures, vacation learning programs focused on craft and culture, ranging from digital photography to metal working, and rug hooking to culinary basics.
