MOTORISTS: TAKE A QUIZ TO TEST YOUR KNOWLEDGE OF THE RULES OF THE ROAD

-

1. Drivers must allow pedestrians to completely cross the road before proceeding, even if they’re in a big hurry or really need to pee. True: Pedestrians have the right of way at school crossings and pedestrian crossovers, and the new law requires drivers to wait until they have completely crossed.

2. Cyclists can use paved shoulders on unrestricted provincial highways. True: The new law will make this legal, and get those pesky cyclists out of your main lanes. You’re welcome, drivers.

3. It’s legal to hit a cyclist with your car door, as long as you are gentle and they gave you a mean look first. False: Dooring a cyclist is illegal and can result in a maximum fine of $1,000 and three demerit points.

4. Drivers convicted of distracted driving will be given a warning as long as they

were texting their moms. False: Distracted driving could cause more fatalities on the roads than drinking and driving by 2016 if current trends continue. You’re looking at fines, demerit points and suspensions in some cases. Bottom line: don’t do it. 5. It’s against the law to even look at a display screen that is unrelated to driving. True: Yes, it’s illegal. Yes, if you’re texting while you’re driving you aren’t looking at the road. And yes — that behaviour does actually cause serious collisions. 6. Drivers must maintain a distance of one metre from cyclists when possible. True: Yes, even if you don’t think a cyclist is operating a real vehicle, the law does. If you wouldn’t ride another car’s bumper, then don’t do it to a cyclist.
