Argos carry momentum into Saskatchewan
The Toronto Argonauts matched their largest margin of victory for a season opener in the last 24 years with their 26-11 upset of the Edmonton Eskimos in Week 1.
In 1991, Toronto beat Ottawa 35-18 for a 17-point margin.
Going into Mosaic Stadium madhouse for the second game of their season, Trevor Harris gets the keys again for Toronto’s offence, while Ronnie Pfeffer will stand in for injured kicker Swayze Waters.
Here are six players to watch for on Sunday:
ARGOS
Trevor Harris: Can he reprise his Ricky Ray impersonation? Harris is a well-prepared, methodical QB. He should prove Week 1 was no fluke.
Brandon Whitaker: Dumped by the Alouettes, Whitaker proved he still has value. He ranks No. 3 in yards from scrimmage with 174 going into the game. If Whitaker goes down or needs a rest, the Argos can go with explosive rookie Henry Josey.
Ricky Foley: Foley should have lots of emotion playing against the Roughriders, where he enjoyed success the last two seasons. He’s still waiting for his first QB sack of 2015, and you can bet he sees a big target on Kevin Glenn’s back.
ROUGHRIDERS
Kevin Glenn: The Roughrider QB doesn’t get the respect he deserves. He replaces the injured Darian Durant. In the last six years (2010-2015), Glenn has recorded more wins as a starter — 45 — than any other CFL QB. He ranks ahead of Darian Durant and Henry Burris with 40 each, and Ricky Ray with 36.
Weston Dressler: The 30-year-old slotback returns to the active roster Sunday after he missed the first game with an undisclosed injury. Dressler missed the first eight games of the 2014 season while trying out for the NFL’s Kansas City Chiefs.
Tyron Brackenridge: The Roughriders safety returned to practice Wednesday after missing both preseason games and the regular-season opener with an undisclosed injury. His presence is expected to improve the defensive tackling, which was a sore point in the opener. Here are three things to watch for: Turnovers killed the Argos last season. This season, they are ranked third with a plus-3 ratio.
Chad Owens had a slow first half in the opener, with only two catches. But he finished with a game-high seven catches for 99 yards. He’s rounding into form after he played little in the pre-season.
Watch for an aggressive secondary again, led by rookie corner A.J. Jefferson. Last week, although Edmonton star Adarius Bowman caught six passes, 10 others were either broken up or fell incomplete.
