Making climate a common cause

-

Re Diverse groups join voices in call for action, July 6 We too must all add our voices to this outstanding array of caring global leaders such as David Suzuki, Jane Fonda and thousands of other highly concerned citizens who are focused on achieving a “justice-based transition to clean-energy economy in Canada.”

While our economy is clearly not in great shape, our Mother Earth’s long-term viability is now perilously in danger of irreversible damage. Both of these great maladies have been caused by man’s insatiable greed, added to our climate’s limited capacity to heal. The global climate summit in Paris in December may well present the last real hope for the diverse global groundswell of committed people who are striving for improving social justice and creating clean jobs and healthy communities, finding solutions and calling out those who are responsible.

Canada has long been considered globally as a leader in many areas but our government is badly out of step with Canadian citizens by not availing itself of the immense opportunities inherent in the emerging global green economy. As time is of the essence, we need to act right now. Rudy Fernandes, Mississauga

It seems several lifetimes ago that a very young David Suzuki was being called “not a real Canadian” and “a crackpot” with “too much hair,” amongst many other things. No comments now that he is a much-recognized face to a public with a greater understanding of what he was trying to tell us then.

Let us all hope that a sufficient number of us remember in October. Unless a change within Canada results from the election, we will not unite with the rest of the world to remedy a situation which we have helped to cause. And the world cannot afford to wait any longer. Ron Gibbens, Richmond Hill, Ont.

How nice of Jane Fonda and David Suzuki to come to Toronto to protest our use of fossil fuels! How much fossil fuel did they consume for the trip?

How does their consumption compare with the average Canadian’s? How much of their consumption is to protest the use of fossil fuels? Just asking. Andy Turnbull, Toronto
