Toronto Star

Thank you, Canada

-

It’s 11:50 a.m. as I sit in the waiting area of Toronto General Hospital. My son is having major cancer surgery.

He is an Australian who has lived and worked in Canada for years now. This is his second cancer surgery in two months. He also had an emergency visit to Kingston General Hospital in the middle of the night while travelling recently.

Every Canadian should be very proud of the health system you have created. The talent, skill and humanity, combined with typical friendly Canadian good manners and spirit, make very difficult times bearable.

I’m a visitor to your country, which I have enjoyed many times as a tourist. I am now a parent who is very grateful to my son’s adopted country. I know medical systems are rarely perfect; however, having experienced excellent facilities and care, I can only admire the society that has produced this. It’s a credit to you all.

I don’t know what the future will hold for my son. I can say he is in great hands in this country. Gary Miller, Melbourne, Australia
