School standards dropping

Re Be wary of graduation rates, July 23 I doubt we’ve improved how we educate to the point grad rates have risen by a quarter. Using resources to help struggling kids is laudable. But it’s time to stop viewing education as a video game, where collecting tokens gets you the credit. I can talk to a kid for five minutes and tell whether he has the math skills to take a course, much more reliably than by looking at a credit counselling summary. Are we better at education? Well one thing is true: either we’ve discovered the 100-year-old secret of education, or we’ve lowered the standards. Marc G. W. Opie, Toronto
