Re A legacy etched in chalk, July 18 Just like ancient drawings found in caves throughout the world, the handwritte­n notes in this poignant story affirm the consistent desire for mankind to leave a mark to say, “I was here and strived to make a positive difference.”

Today’s public education system so devalues the handwritte­n word that we now see young people struggle to write their own name. Very sad that our youth have fewer foundation­al skills than young people educated 100 years ago. Edda Manley, Burlington
