Air travellers already know Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport as a smart and convenient travel option, offering a comfortable, efficient and civilized experience that takes passengers to their destinations right from the heart of the city.

Now how about a digital concierge to make the experience even smoother?

Not content to rest on its reputation as the savvy traveller’s favourite airport, Billy Bishop Airport has a few experience-improving innovations taking off this summer, all in the name of making a departure from YTZ an even more hassle-free and human experience. These include a faster way to get from shore to departure lounge; an improved information system; and, at your service, a helpful mobile app going by the name of Billy.

The first thing passengers making their way to Billy Bishop Airport will notice: An alternative to the ferry, thanks to the opening of the pedestrian tunnel.

Passengers will begin to see what else is in store as they make the six-minute journey under the Western Gap to the island-side atrium. Billy Bishop Airport has designed a system of state-of-the-art digital LED and LCD screens that are conveniently placed throughout the tunnel and connecting buildings so you’ll always know what’s up with your flight.

Billy, the smartphone app, will integrate with screens around the airport to display information and sponsored content to travellers. The screens will use several technologies to determine passenger proximity, and dynamic technology will display customized content.

Billy has other jobs to do, too. Launching in early August and available on iOS, Android and Blackberry, the mobile app is designed to be a go-to travel companion and guide, offering a host of information — both fun and functional — about key destinations served by Billy Bishop Airport. Passengers will enter their itinerary details to receive up-to-date flight information, weather and traffic forecasts.

Billy also contains a digital magazine that will include topical business, tech and lifestyle news, as well as informative and insightful city guides. Travellers will receive insiders’ recommendations on everything from food to fashion, from Brooklyn to Thunder Bay and beyond. It’s Billy’s job to help travellers make the most of their voyage. The app will allow users to save content for offline consumption, should they want to keep reading while aloft and without an Internet connection. And, of course, passengers will be able to enlist Billy all over again to help make their return journey just as calm and enjoyable.
