Girl dies after being crushed by horse

A 12-year-old girl died after being crushed by a horse in Shelburne before the start of the annual Fiddlefest parade there.

The girl, who had experience riding, was in the staging area when her horse reared up, knocking her off. She was then crushed by the horse.

The girl was taken by air ambulance to Headwaters hospital in Orangeville where she died despite having received almost immediate attention from paramedics at the parade.

The parade was cancelled.
