CONNECT WITH YOUR INSTRUCTORS

At the convenient Eglinton Learning Site

-

Among the hustle and bustle of restaurants, stores and movie theatres at Yonge and Eglinton sits Centennial College’s newest academic space. Aptly name the Eglinton Learning Site, it is, however, quite the opposite of the busy area that surrounds it.

“It’s even more intimate than our four main campuses,” says Tim Roy, chair of business development for Centennial’s school of continuing education. “It’s a smaller spot, so you have a great opportunity to connect with your instructors. It really has an air of professionalism.”

Opened in April 2014, the Learning Site facilitates an English language learning program during the day and continuing education offerings such as teaching English as a second language (TESL) and compliance and governance on evenings and weekends. Roy says it is the ideal location for those who may find travelling to Centennial’s east-end campuses difficult.

“The most obvious benefit to studying at Yonge and Eg is the convenience for someone who lives and commutes along the Yonge subway line,” he says. “Someone who works downtown can stop into classes on his way home in the evening. This opens us up to serving people living in different parts of the city. We also love that we’re in this new neighbourhood, which is so dynamic. In addition to studying, you can get errands done and enjoy the area.”

As Centennial continues to determine the right mix of offerings for this location, Roy says the feedback from students and instructors who learn and teach at the Eglinton Learning Site has been excellent.

“The students and teachers are very happy,” he says. “The 15 smart classrooms are truly state-of-the-art, class sizes are smaller and we get really positive reviews.”

And while the Learning Site differs from traditional campuses with additional resources such as recreational facilities and libraries, Roy says one thing that’s exactly the same is the quality of instructors.

“These are practising professionals,” says Roy, pointing to the TESL instructors as an example. “So it not only gives students knowledge of the most recent practices in the field, but instructors may also connect them with professionals to help launch their careers.”
