EXPAND, ENRICH YOUR KNOWLEDGE

-

If you are looking for a way to advance your career, find personal fulfillment or want to pursue a graduate education while thinking across boundaries and disciplines, Seneca College has the solution, says the institution’s chair of English and liberal studies.

“This degree will appeal to individuals who are looking to build on their vocational knowledge and skills and will provide them with a liberal arts education, which is becoming increasingly sought after by employers,” says Fiona Bain-Greenwood of the Bachelor of Interdisciplinary Studies program, a combination of arts and liberal studies. “It was designed to enable people who already had completed post-secondary education to expand and enrich their knowledge by developing critical thinking and core research skills.”

While the program is geared towards those who hold a two- or three-year college diploma from an accredited institution and those who have completed other degree level courses, Bain-Greenwood says it is not exclusive to these learners.

“Anyone can apply to the program,” she says. “However, having prior post-secondary education or credits would allow individuals to begin their degree studies with a number of credits already awarded.”

Because students enter the program with varying years of academic experience, they enroll in courses accordingly and complete their degree in varying amounts of time. Bachelor of interdisciplinary studies can be taken part and full time, and the flexibility allows students to plan their schedules and determine their workload. The one thing all students of this program have in common, however, is a mandatory co-op term.

“We customize co-op opportunities for our part-time students,” Bain-Greenwood says. “Since many of our part-time students are currently employed, they can utilize their current work experience as the co-op aspect.”

Aside from the co-op term, the offering’s curriculum is diverse, covering topics ranging from communications, humanities and social sciences to math and science. It is just one of the aspects that Bain-Greenwood says students appreciate about bachelor of interdisciplinary studies.

“Students in the program have said they love the personalized approach to determining academic pathways, the small class sizes, excellent faculty and the flexibility,” she says.
