Walking wounded: 5 starters out with injuries

The CFL field has been one big landmine for starting quarterbac­ks this season. Counting Toronto’s Ricky Ray, there are five quarterbac­ks projected in the pre-season to be starters who have had to pass the torch to backups due to injuries:

JONATHAN CROMPTON, MONTREAL

Injury: Suffered a bruised shoulder in Montreal’s first game of the season against Ottawa. Status: On the six-game injury list. Return date undetermin­ed. Replacemen­t: Rakeem Cato

DREW WILLY, WINNIPEG

Injury: Suffered a knee injury Aug. 9 when he was hit cleanly by TigerCats linebacker Erik Harris as he released a pass. Status: Expected to miss six to eight weeks, which would make him available to return potentiall­y in early October. Replacemen­t: Robert Marve

RICKY RAY, TORONTO

Injury: Ray actually hurt his shoulder in August 2013 when he was hit by Calgary defensive lineman Charleston Hughes and was lost to the team for six weeks. He decided not to have surgery, but after playing through discomfort in 2014, Ray decided to go ahead with a procedure in November to repair the torn labrum in his right shoulder and a small tear in his right rotator. Status: On the six-game injury list. Return date undetermin­ed, but possibly in late September. Replacemen­t: Trevor Harris

DARIAN DURANT, SASKATCHEW­AN

Injury: Ruptured his left Achilles tendon late in the first half of the season opener. Status: Gone for the season. Replacemen­t: Brett Smith

MIKE REILLY, EDMONTON

Injury: Suffered a knee injury in the Eskimos’ season opener when Toronto defensive lineman Cleyon Laing came in with a low hit while Laing was falling down. Status: Expected to miss 10-12 weeks, which would make him available by the end of September or early October. Replacemen­ts: Matt Nichols, James Franklin Curtis Rush
