Follow New York’s lead on traffic woes

-

Re Fear of car mob blocks solutions, Aug. 27 The traffic woes on our highways and streets can be dramatically reduced with common-sense solutions.

I travel to Hamilton every Wednesday morning. The traffic en route is at speed but the traffic heading to Toronto in the opposite direction is very slow. The HOV lane is always almost empty. It should be opened up to let the traffic flow move at speed. Yes, all motorists pay for all the lanes on our highways. The HOV lanes are discriminatory.

Another answer is one-way streets with co-ordinated traffic lights. Traffic flows very well in New York. And in Hamilton you can drive from one end to the other without stopping. Why not in Toronto?

Also we need to get big rigs off our streets and highways around the GTA during rush hours. They cannot get up to speed like automobiles nor stop as fast.

Trucks are only allowed in and out of New York City between midnight and 5 a.m. All the food and goods come in to feed 20 million people every night.

At least remove them here in Toronto during rush hour and the traffic will speed up dramatically.

The thing our regulators do not understand is that Canadians will never get out of their cars to take public transit. Car pooling is not the answer. Their automobile is their freedom to go anywhere at any time they wish.

If you don’t believe me, just ask any senior who has lost their licence to drive. They feel they have lost their freedom. Patrick Hurley, Oakville, Ont.
