Princess Bride picks revealed

- JILLIAN KESTLER-D’AMOURS STAFF REPORTER

Can anyone other than Andre the Giant fill Fezzik’s (very large) shoes? Who will have enough swagger to pull off Inigo Montoya, not to mention a head of luscious locks? Who could play Buttercup, Miracle Max or Vizzini?

These questions have plagued fans of The Princess Bride since filmmaker Jason Reitman announced he would host a live-read of the 1987 film at TIFF this year.

Well, the wait is finally over — and Reitman’s picks will be sure to have you talking, at the very least.

Gael Garcia Bernal will have to practise saying “My name is . . .” three times fast, as the Mexican actor has been chosen to play swordwielding Inigo Montoya. Donald Glover (of Community fame) will play Vizzini and Chris O’Dowd will play Count Tyrone Rugen. Some Canadian actors will also take the stage, as Rachel McAdams plays Buttercup and teen actor Gage Munroe is the grandson, first played by a young Fred Savage.

Perhaps the most difficult choice was deciding who would play largerthan-life Fezzik.

“Hm . . . @GeorgesLaraque,” Reitman said on Twitter. Yes, you read that right — former NHL enforcer Georges Laraque. Why didn’t we think of that?

Reitman hasn’t revealed all his picks yet so be sure to expect a few more surprises. “We’re going to pay tribute to that perfect script,” he recently promised on Twitter. The Princess Bride returns to TIFF after premiering at the festival in 1987. The live read starts Saturday at 6 p.m. at Ryerson Theatre.
