IT’S ALL FAIR GAME

Find out what’s in store for the city’s Pan Am venues,

More than $1 billion went toward building or renovating stadiums, pools and living quarters to host three weeks of Pan Am and Parapan Am Games competition. The athletes have cleared out, leaving the GTA with some spiffy new facilities.

That pricey investment wasn’t meant to lie dormant after its brief moment in the sun. Elite athletes now have new training facilities, and the wider community has new places to play.

“That was one of the real methodical pieces that went into where we built the venues, how we built them and how they were managed,” said Allen Vansen, the executive vice-president in charge of venues for TO2015.

Some $709 million went toward building an athletes’ village to host the 10,000 athletes, coaches and officials. Though Vansen said it was bittersweet to see the Games end, organizers are proud of the neighbourhood left behind.

“We’re obviously pretty excited about how things went and happy to see the legacy elements now coming into play,” he said.
