The Cube

In 1968, Japanese designer Isamu Noguchi crafted a sculpture that represented the apex of elegant modernism with a free-standing cube balanced on one corner (it sits at 140 Broadway in Manhattan’s financial district and has become a predictable selfie magnet). Partisans riffed off the form to accommodate three sizes of mailboxes, sacrificing no utility to achieve an iconic, enduring form.
