Ontario premier’s Top 5 essentials for travelling

- MAI NGYUEN SPECIAL TO THE STAR

Kathleen Wynne, the 25th premier of Ontario, will be travelling to China, Israel and India within the next year to strengthen economic ties. Here are the five items she never leaves home without.

iPad

I have it set up so I that I have international news and local news in separate folders. I just downloaded the My Singing Monsters app. It’s a game developed in London, Ont., and I’m trying to learn how to play it so I can show it to my grandchildren. You’re supposed to collect eggs and hatch them in different worlds. I love the graphics. It’s such a happy game. Apple iPad 4 16GB, $439

Canadian Mystery Novel

Just before I go to sleep, I need to read something that is not work. Reading mysteries is kind of a secret of mine. I’m reading A Siege of Bit

terns about a Canadian detective who is also a birder. I also like Louise Penny and Linwood Barclay. I’m always reading a non-fiction at the same time, too. One of my anxieties is not having anything to read. A Siege of Bitterns by Steve Burrows, $15.99

Personal BlackBerry

I have a private and work phone, and I use the private phone to call my partner, Jane, and my parents every night when I’m travelling. I’ll also phone my kids. When I fly, I let Jane know that I’ve landed. I don’t have separate ringers to separate my personal and work calls, though. I’m not that high-tech. $499

Saucony Running Shoes

Running is more important when I’m on the road than when I’m home. Sometimes, we’ll arrange local people to run with me, but the vast majority of the time I run alone while my security detail follows. There’s a route in Thunder Bay that I love. We discovered a route that runs along a stream. Routes along water are my favourite. Saucony Echelon 4, $150

Sesame Snaps

I try not to eat a lot because if my stomach is really full, I tend not to feel well. So I will sometimes not eat on the airplane and just have a snack. I usually bring a couple of these with me, and also peanut brittles. They give me a little boost of energy and a little bit of a sugar kick. Individual Pack, $0.50
