OTHER DANGER SPOTS
In Latin America, many environmentalists belong to indigenous communities in remote areas of the Amazon, where they are trying to save their forests from illegal logging and mining. In 2014, 116 activists were killed around the world. These four countries were the deadliest:
Brazil (29) Activists say the government of President Dilma Rousseff has pardoned illegal loggers, waived or eased fines and reduced efforts to recover land that has been illegally cleared.
Colombia (25) Large landowners, mining operators, loggers and dam companies frequently clash with poor indigenous communities.
Honduras (12) At least 111 environmental activists have been killed in Honduras since 2002.
Peru (9) Just weeks before a UN climate conference in Lima, a quadruple murder near the Amazon made international headlines.
