MOHALI, INDIA— Offspinner Ravichandran Ashwin finished with a five-for as India took control of the first test against South Africa.

Ashwin’s 5-51 included a couple of crucial wickets, and helped the home side gain the psychological edge of a 17-run, first-innings lead over test cricket’s top-ranked side.

India was 125-2 in its second innings, 142 runs ahead with eight wickets in hand.
