Cabaret singer in concert

- Martin Knelman

Judith Lander, possibly Toronto’s greatest cabaret singer, is back in the limelight this fall.

Last month she released an excellent CD called From My Life, and launched it with a stunning onenight appearance at Jazz Bistro.

On Saturday Lander is doing an intimate one-night show in Soulpep- per’s cabaret series at the Young Centre.

For this weekend’s Soulpepper concert, Lander will be teamed with singer/pianist Ghislain Aucoin, and the playlist will include several songs by Jacques Brel — another strong figure in Lander’s early career. There are four Brel songs on the CD, with reason.

Lander began her career starring in the Canadian production of Jacques Brel Is Alive and Well and Living in Paris, and at age 24 she was one of the performers who appeared with Brel on the stage of Carnegie Hall.

Most intriguingly, the playlist for the Soulpepper cabaret show includes many songs written by Lander herself. The CD will be available for purchase at the venue.
