Short strokes: All sports are not created equal

A sampling of other sports were women are short-changed compared to their male counterpar­ts:

Tennis grand slams: Women play best-of-three sets; men best-of-five.

Short-track speed skating: The women’s relay is 3,000 metres long; the men’s is 5,000.

Olympic swimming: The longest freestyle race in the pool for women is 800 metres; for men, it’s 1,500.

Olympic biathlon: The women’s races are all shorter. The sprint is 7.5 km to the men’s 10; the women’s mass start is 12.6 km to the men’s 15; and the women’s individual is 15 km to the men’s 20.

Road cycling: The women’s Olympic road race in London was 140 km, the men’s was 250 km.
