THE MODERN MENORAH

- By Debra Norton

Are you on the hunt for stylish and modern Judaica? The warm glow of the menorah is a focal point of Hanukkah decor. Celebrate the season with a modern take on the traditional menorah using marble and copper hardware painted gold. Starting Dec. 6, use it to illuminate each night of Hanukkah and celebrate the Jewish festival of lights.

Step 1: Gather and shop for the supplies. Marble off cuts, tiles and shower thresholds are the perfect material for this project and can be found at tile stores, but we found ours at a local Habitat for Humanity Restore, a great spot to source DIY materials.

Supplies: Marble, 24” by 5” (61 cm by 13 cm), Copper couplings, 3⁄4- inch (2 cm), Super glue, Gold paint, Tape

Step 2: Paint the copper couplings Give the couplings a coat or two of gold paint and let dry according to manufacturer’s directions.

Step 3: Pre-plan where you want your candles to sit Find the centre of the marble and apply the tape in a straight line just off centre, so that the couplings can be centred but are not sitting on the tape. Place each coupling on the marble tile so that it is evenly spaced. Stand back and look at it to ensure it is straight and even.

Step 4: Attach the couplings Apply glue to the bottom of each coupling and press firmly in place. Allow to completely dry before using.

Step 5: Add candles Once the glue has dried completely and the couplings are sturdy, insert your candles and enjoy.
