The Toronto Star’s free, interactive tablet app, Toronto Star Touch, is now available on Android devices.

Perfectly timed for the holiday season, the Android version means more readers will be able to enjoy the innovative storytelling experience that Toronto Star Touch provides.

The Apple iPad version of Toronto Star Touch has already been downloaded more than 100,000 times.

“We are pleased to be able now to offer our Toronto Star Touch app to Android tablet users,” said John Cruickshank, publisher of the Toronto Star.

“It’s estimated there will be nearly two million Android tablets in use in Ontario by 2018,” he added.

From integrated video and photo galleries to interactive maps, the app re-imagines the way news is delivered, building on the Star’s reputation of award-winning news and investigative coverage.

Jane Davenport, managing editor of the Toronto Star, called the app “a groundbreaking way to experience news.”

“We’re delighted to bring the Star’s journalism to an even wider audience with this move,” she said.

Jon Filson, assistant managing editor, tablet development, at the Star, said the Android version is something readers have been asking about since the app was launched in September.

As people head into the holidays, more tablets will be sold as gifts, and people will have more time to enjoy the immersive experience the app offers, he said.

According to Canadian analysis from market research firm Interna- tional Data Corporation (IDC), 44.8 per cent of tablets shipped in the third quarter of 2015 were Androidbased.

Star Touch is based on La Presse+, the free tablet app launched in 2013 by the Montreal-based, French-language, daily newspaper La Presse.

According to an independent survey, more than 460,000 people read La Presse+ every week and more than half of those readers are in the 25-54 age range.

Download the free Toronto Star Touch app, which delivers fresh content to tablets every day by 5:30 a.m., from Google Play.
